A Sour Note for a Sweet Tooth

Growing up I indulged myself with snacks. My favorite were Drake’s products which included: Coffee Cakes, Devil Dogs, Yankee Doodles, Ring Dings, Yodels, Funny Bones etc.  My second choice if they were around would be Hostess products: Twinkies, Fruit Pie, Cup Cakes. Wonder Bread. In those days physical activity was much higher than today and families weren’t concerned with the obesity rates during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Today diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol are in the minds of everyone.

But this post isn’t about my indulgence but of one of the two American icons, Hostess and its sugary treats.

From 1933, Hostess has been in existence , perhaps making children and adults smile when eating a Hostess treat and drinking a cold glass of milk, and now they file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  What was it that caused this to happen?

It wasn’t that Hostess’s image went downhill or the demand for these sugary snacks had fallen. The company was slashing pensions and wages at the same time the head CEO was cashing in on executive pay hikes and bonuses.

This behavior isn’t of great surprise to anyone.

In the article,”What Really Happened to Hostess Twinkies and Wonder Bread” ,  states that the Hostess Brand products are not very popular and are losing market share in bakery sales.

I don’t believe that Hostess’s popularity has declined because of  health conscience families.
